Before you leave

Essential Korean

No need to be bilingual. Enough to read signs, make yourself understood at a restaurant, and stay polite in any situation.

The alphabet: hangeul

Created in 1443 by King Sejong so that everyone could learn to read, hangeul is not a set of symbols to memorise one by one: it’s a purely phonetic alphabet, with 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels.

Each syllable is assembled into a small square block. Example: ㅎ (h) + ㅏ (a) + ㄴ (n) combine into 한 (han). Add 국 (guk, “country”) and you get 한국, Hanguk — literally “the Han country”, Korea.
