Day trip · The capital's port

Incheon인천

The country's third city, and for most travellers just the name of an airport. Yet this is where Korea opened to the world in 1883, and where a landing turned the course of the war in 1950.

Why go

Incheon works in two ways. A half-day from Seoul, for the old port district, an hour away by subway. Or the hours before a flight: the airport sits on an island, next to beaches and small islands linked by bridges.

The two areas are far apart — more than an hour by public transport. Choose one or the other.

The old port

Chinatown

인천 차이나타운

The country's only historic Chinese quarter, born with the opening of the port. This is where jjajangmyeon was invented, the black-bean-sauce noodles that became a national dish; a small museum is devoted to it in the former restaurant that made it popular.

Open Port district

개항장

Right next door, the former Japanese and Western concessions: stone banks, brick warehouses turned into galleries, the country's first Western-style hotel.

Jayu Park

자유공원

Korea's first Western-style public park, on the hill. General MacArthur's statue looks out to sea, in memory of the September 1950 landing.

Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village

송월동 동화마을

An old neighbourhood repainted with fairy-tale murals. Unashamedly kitsch, perfect with children.

Wolmido

월미도

The former landing island, now a seafront promenade with an old-fashioned funfair and seafood restaurants. A monorail loops around it.

Sinpo Market

신포국제시장

Known nationwide for its caramelised fried chicken, dakgangjeong. The queue tells you which stall.

Songdo and the islands

Songdo

송도국제도시

A new city built on reclaimed land, with a central park crossed by a seawater canal plied by water taxis. Interesting for its urban planning more than its charm.

Eurwangni Beach

을왕리해수욕장

The closest beach to the airport, lined with grilled-shellfish restaurants. Sunset over the Yellow Sea.

Muuido Island

무의도

Linked by a bridge since 2019: beaches, a short boardwalk coastal trail, fishing villages. A real break thirty minutes from the terminals.

Offshore islands

덕적도 · 백령도

From the coastal ferry terminal, boats serve Deokjeokdo and other islands. An expedition in its own right, for a second trip.
