The border with the North: what a tour shows, what must be booked, what is closed.
On Seoul's doorstep, a city dominated by a UNESCO-listed fortress.
Twelve kilometres of UNESCO-listed walls in the forest, an hour from the centre.
Dolmens, a thousand-year-old temple, fortresses and a view of the North, on an island without tourists.
Chinatown, the Open Port district, Songdo and the islands — a good idea before a flight.
The country's biggest theme park, in Yongin: wooden roller coaster, zoo, seasonal gardens, and the Caribbean Bay water park next door. Expect about ₩46,000 to ₩68,000 depending on season; tickets bought online in advance are cheaper. Direct buses from Gangnam and Seoul Station, or subway to Giheung then the EverLine light rail.
A small river island planted with avenues of metasequoia and ginkgo, made famous by a TV drama. ITX train from Yongsan to Gapyeong (about an hour), then shuttle and ferry. Combine with Chuncheon, the home of dakgalbi — marinated chicken stir-fried on a big hotplate with cabbage and rice cakes.
In Yongin, a reconstructed Joseon-era village with craftspeople and equestrian shows. Children love it; it combines with Suwon.
To the north-west: Heyri Art Village, Paju Book City and its bookshop-cafés, and Imjingak Park at the gates of the DMZ. Easier by car or on a tour.
The national park on Seoul's doorstep, for a proper mountain hike without leaving the city.
Commuter transport is packed between 7.30 and 9 am, then between 6 and 7.30 pm. Go before or after.
Many sites in the province close on Mondays, including those of the DMZ. Check before you block out the day.
Express buses with four-digit numbers link Seoul to the suburbs faster than the subway. They take T-money and show up in Naver Map.
Apart from the DMZ and theme parks in high season, everything can be decided that morning according to the weather.
